Richard Allen is not that famous or recognized for what he did but he should because he bought his way out of freedom and found the first black church.

When Allen was born he was already a slave he then later bought his freedom and went on a discovery to find the first black church he found it in 1816 it was called African Methodist Episcopal Church. He was known as " Negro Richard" him and his family were sold by Benjamin Chew to a Delaware sometime around 1768. When he was 17 Allen converted to Methodism after hearing a white itinerant Methodist preacher rail against slavery. His owner who already sold Richard mother and three siblings also converted and allowed Richard to purchase freedom for $2,000.

Allen soon  joined a church were black and whites can worship together. He soon became an assistant manager and conducted prayer meetings for African Americans. He became frustrated because of the churches limitations the church placed on him and black parishioner. He then left the church as a part of a mass walkout with the intention of creating an independent church.
